With a history dating back to 1887, the National Museum of Singapore is the nation’s oldest museum with a progressive mind. Beneath its 19th-century colonial exterior, it uses cutting-edge technology to present the nation’s legacy and development. Its galleries highlight fresh perspectives of the Singapore story as they take you on an immersive voyage – one where creative storytelling redefines the conventional museum experience. A cultural and architectural landmark in Singapore, the National Museum hosts innovative activities and events all year round. These include the well-loved Night Festival, visually arresting art installations, as well as performances and film screenings of different styles and genres. You will also find a wide range of facilities and services such as a resource centre which has a growing collection of about 15,000 publications related to cultural studies, design and Singapore’s history.

Former Ford Factory

The Ford Motor Company which was first established in Singapore at Anson Road in 1926, moved to its new state-of-the-art factory located at Upper Bukit Timah Road in October 1941. The Art Deco factory became Ford’s first motorcar assembly plant in Southeast Asia. The factory was later taken over by the Royal Air Force during the Malayan Campaign (8 December 1941 – 31 January 1942) where it was used to assemble fighter planes. However, the planes were hastily moved away from Singapore towards the end of January 1942, when it became clear that victory was unlikely. The Former Ford Factory was restored by the National Archives of Singapore and currently houses a permanent World War II exhibition on the war and its legacies.

Fort Canning Heritage Gallery

The Fort Canning Heritage Gallery traces more than 700 years of history to provide park visitors with an informative and in-depth overview of the rich heritage of Fort Canning Hill. The gallery is divided into five zones (an introduction zone and four themed zones) spread out over two levels of the south wing of Fort Canning Centre. Each zone is themed according to a particular aspect or role that the historic Fort Canning Hill played in the broader history of Singapore. The gallery features archaeological artefacts excavated from sites within Fort Canning Park and multiple digital interactive stations. Content from the Singapore Bicentennial centerpiece event in 2019 has also been repurposed into a cinematic experience in the gallery. Visitors can now watch a condensed version of the ‘From Singapore to Singaporean: The Bicentennial Experience’ video in a mini-theatrette at the gallery. A full set of the costume worn by actors playing Sang Nila Utama from the Singapore Bicentennial is also on display together with the film. The gallery is free for the public and is open daily from 10.00am to 6.00pm. It is closed on the last Monday of the month for maintenance.

Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall

As the Nanyang (Southeast Asia) headquarters of Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s Chinese Revolutionary Alliance or Tong Meng Hui, Singapore assumed a pivotal role in the 1911 Revolution which eventually overthrew the Qing dynasty and led to the birth of modern-day China. Dr. Sun had many loyal overseas Chinese supporters such as Teo Eng Hock, Tan Chor Lam and Lim Nee Soon. They provided invaluable support in the form of fundraising activities and the dissemination of revolutionary principles and ideals. Today, the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall is a national monument and heritage institution managed under the National Heritage Board. The refurbished museum traces Dr. Sun's revolutionary activities in Southeast Asia, the contributions of the Singapore Chinese to the 1911 Revolution, as well as the impact of the revolution on Singapore and the Chinese community.

The Indian Heritage Centre, under the management of the National Heritage Board and with support from the Indian community, traces the history of the Indian and South Asian communities in the Southeast Asian region. The four-storey building is an iconic, unique and sustainable building that blends both traditional Indian as well as modern architectural elements. The architectural design for the facade is inspired by the baoli (or Indian stepwell), and seeks to create an urban forum for the celebration and appreciation of Indian culture. It houses five permanent galleries, a museum shop as well as programming and activity spaces.
